DataCite

DataCite is a global network of data centers, universities, and other scientific research institutions that provides services and support to researchers, data centers, publishers, and research funders. Through DataCite, it is possible to find, identify, and cite research data and other research objects.

The common interest of the DataCite network is to ensure that research results and resources are publicly accessible and interconnected so that their reuse promotes knowledge both now and in the future across and between different scientific disciplines. To make research more efficient, DataCite enables the creation and management of persistent identifiers (PIDs), provides integrated services to improve research workflows, and facilitates the discovery and reuse of research outputs and resources through metadata.

DataCite was founded in 2009 on the principle of being an open, stakeholder-driven community in which organizations worldwide can participate. This principle still applies today. At the same time, services have expanded. DataCite’s umbrella organization was created to safeguard common standards globally to support research and thereby facilitate compliance with good research practices. It supports open infrastructure services to ensure that research results and resources are more easily findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR). DataCite’s services are core components of the scientific ecosystem. As the ecosystem evolves, management, sustainability, and preservation have become increasingly important parts of open infrastructure.

In collaboration with several open science infrastructure organizations and initiatives, DataCite adopted the Principles of Open Scholarly Infrastructure in 2021.

DataCite conducted its own audit against these principles.

DataCite Estonia was established to improve the discovery and accessibility of research data created in Estonia.

From Estonia, the University of Tartu is a member of DataCite and has formed the DataCite Estonia consortium, which also includes Tallinn University, TalTech, and the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

In early 2015, the DataCite Estonia consortium was established to ensure the discoverability and usability of research data created by researchers at member universities.

On the initiative of the University of Tartu Library and the University of Tartu Natural History Museum, and with funding from the Estonian Research Council, the University of Tartu joined DataCite in 2014, gaining the right to assign unique Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to research data across Estonia.

During the project year, the DataCite Estonia web platform, the University of Tartu research data repository DataDOI, and automated solutions for the PlutoF and SARV databases were developed, and the first DOIs were issued for QsarDB research data in the repository.

Members have the right to use all services offered by the consortium related to integration and data center administration, including DOI registration. Any institution or individual may join the consortium if their membership is approved by the consortium council.
